Full-colour reproduction of the 1848 oil on paper on canvas by Thomas Baines, the original of which is in the possession of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, formerly the King George VI Art Gallery, Port Elizabeth. Visible in the background is the settlement of Port Elizabeth – little more than a village at this stage – with the Donkin Reserve’s pyramid and lighthouse discernable at the top of the rise above the Bay. In the foreground, a lighter is conveying passengers in very stormy seas. The sailing vessels are straining at anchor in a high wind. Sea birds skim the waves. A vivid and evocative picture.
